Hard Anti checkers
Hard Anti checkers is a deeper search on the same giveaway rules as Anti checkers. A larger budget, not a different game.
You still win by giving pieces away. Filling the board with your own kings is how you lose.
Giveaway rules against Hard
You win by having no legal move, or no pieces left. Movement matches American checkers — forced jumps still apply — but the result is reversed.
- If you can jump, you must; that is how you often force the opponent to take your men.
- Kings walk one square; they do not fly.
- Crowning on the last rank ends the turn.
Hard Anti search depth
The Hard opponent searches with alpha-beta depth about 5 and the same capture extensions as Medium.
The evaluation is tuned for giveaway play — fewer of your pieces and fewer moves for you are better.
It plans further ahead than Medium, but it is still a fixed-depth engine — not a master program.
Long traps on Hard Anti
Long trap preparation
Hard plans several jumps ahead. Build sacrifices that only work if the opponent takes line A on turn one and line B on turn two — not a single obvious feast.
Limit safe moves
If the opponent still has a quiet slide, you may be losing the race to stall. Force jumps that shrink their legal move list each turn.
King timing under pressure
When promotion is unavoidable, crown on a square that immediately walks into a jump. Hard will try to dodge — use follow-up men to close escape diagonals.
Anti checkers difficulty levels compared
| Level | Best for | Search | Typical gap | Practice focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | First games of English giveaway | alpha-beta depth ≈ 1 (no quiescence) | Walks into obvious feed-and-run chains | Line up sacrifices the AI must take in one turn |
| Medium | Players who know the reversed goal | alpha-beta depth ≈ 3 (with quiescence on captures) | Dodges the clearest one-move baits; shorter sacrifice math | Use the edges to limit where the opponent can jump |
| Hard (this page) | Longer sacrifice setups | alpha-beta depth ≈ 5 (with quiescence on captures) | Plans several jumps ahead; fewer free giveaways | Set traps that only pay off after two of your moves |
